Nike Ease Challenge

December 2016

Inspiration

Nike challenged students to design a shoe that's easy to put on for those with limited dexterity.

I thought of my brother, Jonathan, who has struggled with a condition that forced him to wear orthotics for the first 12 years of his life.

We both loved sports growing up, and his orthotics held him back physically and psychologically.

With the help of my friend, Jordan, we were able to design a shoe to fit Jonathan's needs.

"Being held back by my orthotics made it harder to keep up with everyone."

Concepts + Prototypes

Slap Bracelets

Slap bracelets are bistable structures that maintain a stable shape in both rolled and flat positions.

By bending the bracelets at certain positions, the point at which the bracelet curls can be changed.

Looking at Rear Entry

By using slap bracelets for rear entry design, the athlete has easier access the shoe, but the shoe has higher risk of snapping open.

Functional Prototype

Ace Recovery Brace

Using Jonathan's input for guidance, we looked at combing the support of an ace recovery brace with the technology of slap bracelets to drive the final design.

Functional Prototype

The final prototype was modeled for different types of shoes where two slap bracelets hinge the shoe tongue around the athlete's foot.

This design allowed for optimized entry, stability, and security.

We did not focus of aesthetics as we were more concerned with creating a solid functional design.
