Seattle, Washington

[Context] - The Emerald City

Seattle was the second stop on the West Coast/Silicon Valley Immersion trip, and despite rainy days, Seattle is an absolutely gorgeous city. A great blend of coffee [haha puns], nature, and a growing technology hub make Seattle an exciting place to be.

[In the bubble] - Pike Place Market

Seattle’s Pike Place Market, an iconic symbol of the city, was first organized in 1907 to support local farmers and fishermen that supplied the growing population with fresh produce. In the years prior to the founding, wholesalers would buy from the farmers and sell to warehouses at elevated prices, but the profits never made it back to the farmers. In an effort to support the farmers, the Pike Place Market created a marketplace that allowed for direct sale to customers thereby eliminating the need for a middle man. Now Pike Place is a protected historic area of Seattle and continues to support its patrons with a “web” of organizations that provide social services and affordable housing to those in need. Pretty cool to see a city supporting those who give it its charm. Just watch out for the strong smell of fish.

[Here's something else] - Coffee of Seattle

Seattle is home to the original Starbucks [and the most per capita in the U.S. (shocker)] . As the story goes, Howard Schultz, former CEO, traveled to Italy to learn first hand about coffee shops. Using this experience, the Starbucks coffeehouse concept was born. Schultz’s experience was a perfect example of inspiration drawn from traveling-- something I hope to do through my trips. One of my favorite parts about Starbucks, however, is their sense of corporate social responsibility. From baristas to coffee suppliers, Starbucks ensures that it remains a socially and economically responsible business. All employees are given comprehensive healthcare plans, and through a partnership with Arizona State University, employees can even obtain a two-year degree paid for by Starbucks. Through the Hiring Heroes campaign, Starbucks hires veterans and their wives with a goal of hiring 25,000 by 2025. For such a large company, Starbucks knows how to do the right thing. It’s coffee might be a tad overpriced [understatement], but Starbucks is making the world a better place and I’m willing to pay a little extra for that.

[My thoughts] - A whole 2 pennies

Seattle is a beautiful city with a forward-thinking, socially conscious culture as demonstrated by both Pike Place Market and Starbucks. With the rapid growth of Amazon (founded in 1994) and the steady presence of Microsoft (located in Redmond), Seattle’s tech sector has grown to welcome other tech giants like Google and Facebook. With a view of Mount Rayneir and exciting tech developments, Seattle is a city I can’t wait to return to.
